Winter Protocol

During the winter season, from May to November, our national park has certain restrictions.

Why is there a winter protocol?

During winter, conditions in Cerro Castillo National Park change dramatically. Snow, ice, extreme cold, and the climatic variability typical of Patagonia make access a more demanding and risky activity.

Therefore, between May and November, self-guided entry is restricted, and all access must be carried out under protocol. This system allows for pre-evaluation of each activity, review of requirements, experience, and equipment, and authorization of only those entries that meet the necessary conditions to be carried out safely and responsibly.

Furthermore, in winter, an emergency can be more difficult to respond to, as snow and ice complicate movement, and in an isolated territory like Aysén, available services and support may be more limited than in urban areas.

The winter protocol seeks to protect people, regulate park use, and safeguard a mountain environment that requires greater precautionary measures at this time of year.

  1. Guided Mountain and Snowfield Activities
During the winter season, all mountain or mid-mountain guides wishing to enter Cerro Castillo National Park must hold valid certification (ACGM, UIAGM, ANGM, or similar) and complete the guide and passenger declaration form at least 5 days in advance. Subsequently, they must make the corresponding payment of $8,000 per person (without exception, including guides) and include the proof of payment in the designated field within the same form. Entry will be subject to prior approval and confirmation of payment receipt as a requirement to authorize the activity under winter conditions.

  2. Sports Activities
During the winter season, sports activities must be requested in advance via email at least 5 days prior for evaluation. Once instructions are received, participants must complete the sports activity declaration form, make a payment of $8,000 per person (for easement concept), and include the proof of payment in the designated field. Entry will only be valid once approval and confirmation of payment receipt have been obtained. Prior to entry, demonstrable knowledge, experience, and adequate equipment must be shown, thus ensuring proper risk management in a high-mountain environment.

  3. Educational, Scientific, and Other Special Entries
Educational outings for public or private institutions, as well as scientific entries or other special entries, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. To do so, a prior request must be sent to the email address pncerrocastillo@gmail.com. If authorized, the corresponding form must be completed, the indicated payment made, and the proof of payment included. The activity will be subject to the final approval and confirmation of payment receipt by the park administration.
